Starting Yoga at Home: Why It's a Great Idea
Practicing yoga at home offers freedom — choosing your schedule, pace, and style, without group pressure. 15 minutes in the morning are enough to transform your day. But you need to start with the right foundations.
Basic Equipment
- A non-slip mat 4 to 6 mm thick
- A yoga strap for stretches
- Two yoga blocks to support postures
- Comfortable attire (leggings + sports bra or top)

Posture 1: Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
Feet together, arms by your sides, spine lengthened, calm breathing. It seems simple, but it's the foundation of all standing postures. It teaches alignment, grounding, and conscious breathing.
Hold: 1 to 2 minutes, 3 deep breaths.
Posture 2: Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
The iconic yoga posture. Hands flat, feet flat, pelvis lifted upwards, body in an inverted V. It stretches the entire back of the body, strengthens the arms, and calms the mind.
Common pitfall: straightening the legs at all costs. Prefer to keep knees slightly bent and a straight back.
Posture 3: Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II)
Power pose: legs spread, front knee bent at 90°, arms extended horizontally, gaze forward. It strengthens the legs, opens the hips, and develops concentration.
Hold: 30 seconds on each side.
Posture 4: Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana)
Standing, bend forward completely relaxing the upper body. Hands drop towards the floor, head hangs. It relieves lower back tension, calms the nervous system, and stretches the back of the legs.
Keep knees slightly bent if hamstrings are tight.
Posture 5: Child's Pose (Balasana)
The recovery posture. Kneeling, sit back on your heels, extend your arms forward or along your body, rest your forehead on the floor. It's the refuge between two more intense postures.
Use whenever a posture becomes too intense.
Final Tip: Regularity Trumps Intensity
10 minutes every day is better than 1 hour once a week. The body learns through repetition, not performance. Give yourself time, and most importantly: have fun.
